The Democratic party had a grip on congress. With the shutdown, the American public saw who was responsible. They saw ICE getting more money than the marines while their basic necessities became unaffordable, they saw Trump spend millions on parties and give $40 billion to a failing crypto-fraudster in Argentina while he sued to keep Americans from being fed. The Democrats finally had the upper hand, finally had a sword to hold over the Republican's heads, and they gave it up. 8 Democratic Senators- their names are listed in the article- switched to break the deadlock and vote for the reopening of the government, claiming that doing so was the only moral choice. Let us remember- the shutdown was caused by Republicans refusing to continue funding the Affordable Care Act, an act that, while flawed, keeps 24 million Americans from poverty. Without it, their health care cost would increase by 5% of their annual income, costing some thousands of dollars. In exchange for Democrats giving up their only leverage, the Republicans agreed to vote on the ACA- If the Democrats back abortion bans. The Democrats have promised to oppose this, just like they promised to oppose an end to the shutdown that didn't guarantee the ACA. This is why you cannot cede ground to a fascist. Give up an inch, and they will take a mile.
And yet the Democrats have ceded to the Republicans. They have given up, and while it may seem that only a handful of Democrats broke ranks, the truth goes much deeper. These 8 Benedict Arnolds are either retiring or not up for election until 2028, meaning that the senators who have enraged their supporters are conveniently the ones immune to pressure from their supporters. And there's the matter of Schumer, the minority leader in the Senate- While he voted against the end to the shutdown and claimed no knowledge, the traitor Democrats have made it clear he knew full well about their plans. Either they are telling the truth or he is so incompetent that he, as leader of the Senate Democrats, could not sense this obvious plot. Either way he must go. The call of "vote blue no matter who" echoed through the 2022 midterms. It kept the Republicans from a monopoly on power, to be sure- It gave the Democrats the negotiating potential they had over the budget. Look how that went. A coward is better than a fascist, but a coward will not protect you from a fascist.
The 2025 elections proved that Americans oppose Trump. The blue wave saw Americans elect Democrat after Democrat across the nation. In New York in particular, Zohran Mamdani beat out Andrew Cuomo in spite of all the later's tough talk and fear mongering. That election proved that it is not enough to make your voters vote against someone else, you must make them vote for you. The Democratic party is the opposition party. If they will not oppose, we must.
Groups exist inside and outside of the party that can influence it- the Young Democrats of America are a group that help advance Democratic candidates. What they need is not money but volunteers who will support true progressives and true opponents of this regime. If you can, join them and work to do so. Other groups exist that you can join outside of the party- beyond the protest groups Indivisible and Mobilize, Run For Something is a group that campaigns for progressive on down-ballot elections. With this, we can push the Democratic party towards actual opposition in the 2026 midterms. Before that, you can use Find you Representative to track who you can vote for. Keep an eye on them and on what they support. Call them, write to them, do whatever you can to push them into opposition, and if they refuse, primary them in their elections. Whether they're up in 2026, 2027, 2028, or further, these positions must be used to advocate for Americans. We cannot allow them to be held by people who won't. Finally, a petition is circulating that demands Schumer step down as Senate minority leader. While nothing may come of it, it needs to be made loudly clear that he is unpopular and unsupported by the Democratic base.
On a final and unrelated but no less important note, the food situation in America is still poor. While some SNAP aid has resumed, Trump is still intent on keeping as much food out of American bellies as he can. Prices are still rising and, with the ACA in doubt, the cost of living is becoming unaffordable. Until the situation can be returned to normal, Americans are going to have to come together. Feeding America is a nationwide group that is committed to providing food to Americans in need. If you can give your money or time to them, please do so. If you are in need, you can use their resources to get food or find a nearby food bank.
God Bless America
