In spite of significant domestic and international push back, ICE has continued it's operations. After killing Renee Good, Alex Pretti- a nurse who served American veterans- was tackled by several ICE agents and murdered. He and Good are only two of eight either murdered or allowed to die by ICE in the streets or in unjust imprisonment in this year alone. This death toll is unacceptable and proof that ICE cannot be allowed to continue to exist- abolishing ICE is currently more popular than maintaining it by 5% according to a pol conducted only a day after Alex Pretti's murder. Despite what conservatives who've placed (D) next to their names might tell you, abolishing the agency is now the moderate position. In the face of these murders, the Democrats are arguing for minor reform and insisting they will not fund the government if their slight demands are not met. Just like they insisted they would not fund the government if the government did not fund the ACA. Even this token resistance is likely to be abandoned by that kapo Schumer, who has given the Republicans a two weeks of leeway with the hope that the American people will move on and allow the Republicans to survive.
If the Democratic establishment will not step up to the moment, we must. People have worked not only to protest ICE, but to halt their actions. Rapid response networks ICE Out For Good, a website dedicated to anti-ICE actions, has a guide on how to build local response groups that resist ICE. In some areas and states, local police may be working with ICE. Learn if they are so that you can know if a patrol car is cause for alarm. Most importantly set up a system of communication. These groups are meant to protect local communities, and they can't do that if they aren't connected to those communities. The 50/50/1 movement has resources on how to organize protests and conduct them safely- many of the points there can be carried over to ICE watch groups. The tarjetas rojas, cards that contain a guide to the legal rights of migrants, can be given to those who need it, while AOC's Know Your Rights website can do the same on a more comprehensive level.
Meanwhile, the Democratic party needs to have its establishment thrown out. Schumer, Jefferies, and the rest have proven themselves some combination of unable and unwilling to defend the Constitution and the American people. The Democratic party is our best hope to defeat the Republicans, but it clearly must be altered to do so. We, The People deserve a better instrument of our will. Run For Something and the Justice Democrats are both dedicated to supporting progressive candidates across the nation, while the Young Democrats of America are accepting donations and volunteers who might change the group from the inside out. Use Congress' find your rep service to know who represents you, and start tracking their votes. If they oppose this regime, support them in the future. If not, vote against them in the primary elections before these midterms.
Lastly, another No Kings protest is planned for the 28th of March. Protests serve an important part in our movement, creating visible opposition to overreach and letting those who oppose this regime know they are not alone. Mark the date on your calendars and prepare for the protests.
God Bless America.
