The chief issue of the day is Iran. On the night of February 28th, America and Israel began the Iran War. The situation is both deeply complex and incredibly simple. I have no regard for the late Ayatollah or the Islamic regime he headed. However, their nature changes nothing about America's actions here. The Islamic regime is still in power. The loss of the Ayatollah has only turned him into a martyr and created a bloodlust within Iran's government. Nearly a dozen countries have been bombed by Iran for hosting American and Israeli troops, with Cyprus being the furthest away to be bombed. The Straight of Hormuz has been declared closed by Iran, with at least three sailors already killed by Iranian strikes. Israel stands at the brink of invading Lebanon, America is at the verge of invading Iran, and this is all the fault of the Trump regime. While a good deal of the damage is being dealt by Iran, that is because it has been bombed by America and Israel. Besides the damage dealt by Iran, the damage dealt to Iran includes many civilians, like an elementary school in Minab bombed by American jets, killing more than 100. This war goes against not just international law, but American law- only the American congress can authorize this kind of deployment. This is another part of Trump's efforts to subordinate the military not to the American people, but to him. The fact that these orders were given is enough to condemn the president. The fact that these orders were followed speaks to a deeper rot that must be cleaned from America.
Our current ability to affect things is limited. The scope of current operations is beyond our ability to halt. A war powers resolution has failed thanks to the GOP's fanatic obedience to Trump. There's little the senate democrats can do even if they had to will to. However, we must do something at least so that when those who come after us know we did not sit idly by while this happened. Protests are being planned by the 50/50/1 movement alongside the No Kings movement for the 26th of this month and earlier. There are resources dedicated to providing legal counsel to soldiers being given illegal orders. If you know anyone who needs them or need them yourself, take advantage of them. Meanwhile, as the situation in the Middle East continue to deteriorate, the suffering of the people there will continue to worsen. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies is in need of both funds and volunteers. If you can, give to them in this increasingly trying time.
